Yeyhay people! I made it to the sunny land of Cambodia on 1st March! Flight landed at 11am and there were some very friendly people from VSO to greet us three Brits that flew over together. We got our Visa’s then headed straight into a taxi for the 30 minute drive to the VSO office in Phnom Penh, where we’re staying until Wednesday.
We were blessed with a taxi with air-con, how grand! It’s hot here, but not unbearable – it might become more unbearable as the months go on, we’re not fully into the hot season yet! I couldn’t say how hot it is as I don’t have a thermometer – but you can feel your skin burning when you’re in the sun for more than 10 minutes! It’s great 
The roads here are astonishing! Seriously to the UK eye it’s a wonder how anyone survives!
There are all kinds of vehicles, bikes and moto’s on the roads – there are lanes where one way traffic is meant to be going, but as far as I can tell not many people bother about this! I haven’t seen many traffic lights either and as for pedestrian crossings? Forget it! Everything just kinda weaves in and around each other, meandering around the road in which ever lane is better. At junctions people jut seem to go for it, as I can’t see any traffic lights! When you’re walking and need to cross the road it’s the same system – just go for it! Traffic won’t stop for you, so you stop halfway across the road for it or they swerve round you! Its actually really fun – and seems to work really well. I can see myself coming back and trying to cross the M1 and wonder why everyone thinks I’m suicidal!!!
Today we went on a cyclo (pronounced see-clo) tour round Phnom Penh. For those of you, like me, who don’t know what a cyclo is – I can only describe it as being similar to a kind of mini sun lounger that has the back half of a bicycle attached to the back of it! I have put some photo’s of the tour and of my room here on this site. To access these click on my photo on the top right (sdam in Khmer!) and you should see the photo’s on the right.
At the moment everything still seems a bit like a holiday. We are getting cooked for, cleaned after, getting shown around and doing all the touristy things – I haven’t even unpacked my bag yet so am still living out the suitcase!
On Wednesday we move onto a place called Kampung Cham – this will be our home until the end of April where we complete our language and culture/orientation training.
There are 10 so far in our group and I think 3 more to join us later on during the language training.
Not much more news at the mo.. Will keep you posted as and when I get to the internet cafes! Enjoy the photos xx
